Begin with Settings → Usage
Open Claude’s official Usage settings and confirm that you are viewing the account and plan you intended. Read the allowance currently restricting your work. Copy the actual reset time attached to that allowance instead of estimating it from your last message.
Anthropic’s Pro documentation describes five-hour session limits and an account-assigned weekly reset. Its usage guidance also explains that Claude surfaces share the subscription allowance. Moving between a browser and another Claude surface is therefore not a reliable way to establish a fresh budget.
Give each window its own reminder
If Usage shows more than one relevant window, record each separately. Use names that remain understandable a week later, such as “Claude — session” and “Claude — weekly.” Include an account nickname if you have multiple accounts, but leave email addresses and other private details out of public notes.
Copy the full date and check the time zone before saving. Then compare your saved reminder with the official display. A timer’s job is to hold the time you checked; it should not invent a weekly schedule based on when you subscribed or when you opened a chat.
- Use the current Usage screen, not a remembered time from last week.
- Distinguish the short window from the weekly one in the timer name.
- Update a saved time when the official display changes.
- When the countdown ends, return to Claude to confirm availability.
Prepare the next useful task
A simple waiting routine is to gather the material for your next task and decide what a good result looks like. For a document review, that could mean choosing the document, listing the decisions it needs to support, and writing down the questions you want answered.
Start with a scope you can review before adding more work. Keep a short list of completed outputs and remaining tasks. This gives you a useful record even if your next session ends sooner than expected. It is a workflow recommendation, not a guarantee of any particular number of messages.
Check the kind of problem before retrying
A usage warning, a problem with a particular request, and a service outage call for different checks. Read the message first. If it names an allowance, compare it with Usage. If Claude is generally unavailable, consult Anthropic’s status page and see whether the affected service matches what you are using.
An operational status does not establish that your account has allowance remaining. If you still cannot explain the restriction, save the time, the visible message, and the affected product for official support. Avoid turning an unverified guess into a new timer or repeatedly changing accounts to test a rumor.
